Now, this was a nice introduction to a first feature. Shot in various locations
around the Australia and the capital - Canberra using many,
many volunteer people to make it happen. As with most places, there
is usually an ubundance of Martial Artists and Acrobats with skills and strengths in many areas -
This film grabbed those talents and got them working together to produce this
first of many features for Warren Coulton and Misha Cacija of Clear Vision Films.
For my Brother and I it was a chance to have a fight scene with Warren, the two
of us against the bad guy, and in this case he wins - But damn it! we demand a rematch.
By this stage we had already worked together on a couple of short fight
scenes (ANU Fight Scene and Watering the Lawn) and it was time to get
together and work on another for this movie. Through a collaborative
effort, the scene was coreographed and fine tuned until the big day arrived in Early November 2002.
We started at about 11:00am and did a walk through in the small room. Only minor
adjustments were made to the choreography to fit in, but some extra
improvisations had to be made for falling and in Steve's case, flipping
onto the polished concrete floor - Check out the movie preview at
the website for his "Arabian" flip
on the concrete. He also pulls off a spectacular spin that is
not in the preview, no cables, just pure Gymnastic athleticism. Flippin
Legend!
Using a combination of Round Houses, Jump Kicks, Elbow to Elbow combat, punch after
punch we shot many takes to get timing right and the camera angles
correct. After a cool 10hrs shooting we walked out of there with many camera shots, a few
bloopers, which none involved scarring and our names and faces etched
into some movie archive somewhere.
After this fight scene, there were a few tired faces, but for Steve and I
our experience on YakkaOy was only up until that point in time. Warren
and Misha had another 3 weeks of tight shooting to follow which also
included many more fight scenes involving multiple guys and gals,
Explosions and gunfire. I can't speak for those guys, but I had heaps of fun doing it.
Many people deserve to be mentioned, because without them the night would not
have been a success - Brad, Warren, Misha, Tua, Harley, Tamson, Big/Little
Bro Steve, and Sharon (always my moral support and nurses my bruises
afterwards - That's the best bit!)
